| Abstract： |
Along with the globalization of politics and business, developing Japanese people's communicative competence in English has long been recognized as a matter of urgent importance. No one can deny the fact that English now functions as a de facto lingua franca connecting people throughout the world together for many purposes, even beyond politics and business. While there has been severe criticism of its excessive predominance, the benefits of sharing a common language are also undeniable, especially now when global communication and cooperation are more vitally needed than at any time in the past. How can English education contribute to the promotion of world peace and friendship? What would communicative competence for such purposes be like and what should we as English educators do to cultivate it? These questions will be discussed and considered by participants from Japan and throughout the world at this international convention.
政治・経済活動のグローバル化とともに、日本人の英語によるコミュニケーション能力の育成が重要課題と認識されるようになって久しい。政治・経済のみならず、教育、研究、文化交流など、様々な分野で英語は今や世界を繋ぐリンガ・フランカとしてもっとも現実的に機能している言語といえよう。そうした英語の圧倒的優位の状況を危惧する批判的意見がある一方で、過去のどの時代よりも世界的な対話と協調を必要とする今の時代にあって、ひとつの言語を共有できる恩恵は否定できないだろう。英語教育は世界の平和と友好に寄与するのか、もし寄与するとすれば、それはどのようなもので、そのための英語コミュニケーション力育成に向け私たち英語教育関係者は何をすべきなのであろうか、本国際大会で国内外の研究者を交えて考えてみたい。 |
